We’ve received multiple questions on the topics of simultaneous submissions and stories which exceed the word count limit, so we’ve updated the rules on details page.
Regarding simultaneous submissions, we consider it only fair authors be able to do so. The inconvenience we experience with such a withdrawal, is more than offset by the knowledge the author has found paid work, which is a good thing in and of itself.
Word count winds up being a bit more complicated in practice. It is a judgment call as to whether the story absolutely needs the extra words. A great story will trump the rules. We’ve limited the advance to $150, which corresponds to the 5K word count limit, however the downstream royalty calculation would take into account the actual word count for larger stories.
As an example, a selected story of 6,000 words would generate a $150 advance plus a pro rata authors’ share of downstream royalties. Assuming a total word count of 75,000; the story would be accorded an 8% share of the Contributor’s Pool (6000/75000). Details contained within the model contract.
If there are additional questions, please feel free to contact us.
Today we passed a milestone for the call; submission of stories to date cumulatively totals more than one million words. The review team has their work cut out for them, but reading so many great stories is a pleasure in and of itself.
Feel free to stress-test our prescription eyewear with more submissions, we’re committed to finding the stories which perfectly fit the concept.
The target word count for this first volume is 75,000.
Back to my reading!
In response to several questions; we won’t be announcing selected stories until the submission deadline of September 30th has passed. The only exception will be those stories we decide early do not fit the concept, for whatever reason, and in such cases we will notify the author it is no longer under review.
So, if we haven’t contacted you, your story is still under consideration.
To those who haven’t submitted a story as yet, the process will remain open through the submission deadline, plenty of time to put the final polish on something truly bubble off-plumb!
We kicked off our call for submissions 7/21/2018 and apparently the concept struck a chord. We’re seeing a good response and look forward to reading them all.
For authors who have already submitted a story, thank you and we’ll contact if there are any issues or suggestions.
The deadline for submissions remains September 30, 2018. Don’t hesitate to contact us if there are any questions or concerns. Periodically, we’ll publish Q&A for everyone’s benefit in this space.
Dust off the odd, and send it in!
We’ve selected a cover for the Bubble Off Plumb collection of short stories. The call for submissions will open next week. Dust off any and all of the strange or odd stories in your portfolio, they may have found a home.
